Summary (from the publisher):
In a garden surrounded by a tall fence, tucked away behind a small, quiet house in an even smaller town, is an apple tree that is rumored to bear a very special sort of fruit. In this luminous debut novel, Sarah Addison Allen tells the story of that enchanted tree, and the extraordinary people who tend it.…
The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers. Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures.
A successful caterer, Claire Waverley prepares dishes made with her mystical plants—from the nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the pansies that make children thoughtful, to the snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile, her elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear. They are the last of the Waverleys—except for Claire’s rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as their own mother had years before.
When Sydney suddenly returns home with a young daughter of her own, Claire’s quiet life is turned upside down—along with the protective boundary she has so carefully constructed around her heart. Together again in the house they grew up in, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind, as Claire struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And soon the sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy—if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom—or with each other.
Quotes:
Claire didn't know why, but every once in a while the tree would actually throw apples, as if bored. When she was young, her bedroom window looked out over the garden. She would sleep with her window open in the summers, and sometimes she would wake in the morning to find one or two apples on the floor. Page 37.
When Evanelle brought you something, you were usually going to need it sooner or later, though that cat bed she gave Claire five years ago had yet to find a use. Most people in town treated Evanelle kindly but with amusement, and even Evanelle didn't take herself too seriously. But Claire knew there was always something behind the strange gifts Evanelle brought." Page 6.
My Opinion:
Garden Spells is a story filled with enchantment and subtle magic. There are no Harry-Potteresque spells or sorcery going on here. The magic is of a different sort. The Waverly garden is enchanted, and the apple tree has special powers - seemingly having a will of its own. Elsewhere in the garden, plants and herbs have influencing powers when used in foods.
While the entire story is infiltrated by the magic of the garden, the true story is about the Waverly sisters - Claire and Sydney. Both sisters have issues that they need to deal with. Claire has emotionally isolated herself so that she won't get hurt, while her sister Claire has returned to her home town after fleeing an abusive relationship. This story is about how both of the sisters find healing and come to accept their identity as Waverlys.
Would it be too much of a pun if I said that this was an enchanting read? Because it really was! All of the characters were interesting and easy to relate to. The citizens of Bascom were quirky, eccentric, and entertaining.
Each of the Waverlys has a gift, and my favorite was Evanelle's (she is the older cousin of the sisters). Evanelle's gift is that she has to give things to people that they will need at a later date - she somehow just knows what they will need. The results are sometimes hilarious as she is compelled to give people various items - some that are quite embarrassing.
Throughout the book there is a constant underlying tension since you never know if or when Sydney's abusive boyfriend might find her. Although the tension is there, it is really in the background, and for the most part the book is a lighthearted read.
I recommend Garden Spells to anyone who enjoys a bit of magic in their reading.

This book sounds lovely. I meant to pick it up when I first heard about it, and now I've actually added it to my wishlist. Thanks for featuring it!
I read this book last year and completely agreed with you (except for the fact that it was really similar to Hoffman's Practical Magic.
Still thought it was really good.
Nice review!
Ooh, I just loved this book. You're so right when you call it enchanting because that's exactly what it is. Evanelle is a great character, that's for sure!
I am so pleased you enjoyed it. You must read The Sugar Queen too. I loved both equally.
Sounds like a beautifully written book. I love the first quote you included.

I really enjoyed this book as well. I just picked up The Sugar Queen at the library yesterday because I felt in the mood for a little magical realism.
I loved this book and felt the same way about it. It is enchanting! I am reading The Sugar Queen right now and it has a similar magical feel about it. It's different from Garden Spells and I'm enjoying it very much.
What a beautiful cover (of course, we'll probably see it on several other books now as well!). And it sounds like an enjoyable read. "Lighthearted" is just what is needed for the summer!
Great review. This book was enchanting. I also like The Sugar Quuen.
It does sound enchanting. With just a little tension but not so much that it isn’t fun to read. I have added it to my TBR list. My very long TBR list.
Sounds sweet! It wouldn't normally appeal, but your review makes it sound charming!
It is an enchanting book! LOL. I'm sure I used that exact same word in my review but it just works so well. =)
I recently picked this one up, solely based on the cover and reading the synopsis. Since picking up I've now seen a couple of reviews on it and I can't wait to read it! Glad to hear your enjoyed it!
I love the sound of this book - the magic and the tension sound enchanting. Great review.
This was one of my favorites by her. I really liked it.
I haven't read this yet but I can see that I really need to. So many bloggers have read and loved this book. I guess it's my turn. Great review.
Lovely review. I picked up this one from the library and need to get it read.
That's such a lovely cover. I haven't been tempted to read her before, only now, thanks!
I like the cover, the title, and your review. It is a beautiful book that I would want just sitting on the coffee table this time of year.
This goes on the "must" list! :)
I just read this book and loved it. The author's website is pretty great as well...she was very generous with our book club. She's one of my new favorites.
I loved the Sugar Queen and from your review I need to read this one too!
I enjoy a good pun, and this does sound "enchanting". I'm drawn to the cover, also.
Loved your review and I too found this book to be enchanting!!
I totally agree with you. I loved this book. It's sort of like Practical Magic, except more fun and magical and likable. I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
Good morning! I am still thinking about this books and made the book, and your review my Morning meandering post.
Thanks again for presenting such a lovely book!

I really need to find time to read this!
Thank you for the great review, Alyce! This is one I'm really looking forward to reading.
I loved this book. Read a winter or so ago and sat in front of a nice fire wishing I had an enchanted garden. Great review!
I really enjoyed both this book and the follow up as well. I am really looking forward to reading whatever Sarah Addison Allen comes up with next!
This sounds like a lovely book, Alyce! I like the quotes you picked to share from the book. I am intrigued about what kind of subtle magic this garden possesses. And I love the cover!
Oh, I loved this book, too! Definitely an "enchanting" read -- and I love puns :) I read The Sugar Queen, her second book, last month -- and I liked it just as much, if not more.
I really liked this book as well. Just finished Sugar Queen was good as well but kind of a let down after reading G. Spells.
"though that cat beds she gave Claire five years ago had yet to find a use."
Maybe its a good idea to donate that cat bed. Shelters will surely find a new owner of that bed.
Great review Alyce! There needs to be more time in the day so I can fit this one into my schedule =) It definitely just got moved up some after reading your review!
