Mailbox Monday is hosted by Marcia at The Printed Page.
This week I shopped at the Friends of the Library annual book sale and bought seventeen books for only nine dollars. I love deals like that! I also received one book that was a contest win, and one ARC.
Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupery - I didn't open this one until I got home. It's in French. I guess I just have one more reason to learn French now.
Gossamer by Lois Lowry - I don't even know what this is about, but I was so impressed with The Giver that I picked it up anyway.
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry - I read this one ages ago and don't remember how it ends. My mother-in-law told me she hated the ending, so that piqued my curiousity.
The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith - I've read his Sunday Philosopher Club books (aka The Isabel Dalhousie books) but haven't read anything from this series yet. I tried listening to this one on audiobook several months ago, but gave up on it. I'm hoping I like reading it in book form better.
Waiting by Ha Jin - A total impulse buy. I have no idea what it's about.
Chang & Eng by Darin Strauss - A fictitious retelling of the lives of these famous conjoined twins.
Circus of the Earth and the Air by Brooke Stevens - Another impulse buy. It looks like an odd book, and I'm not sure I'll like it, but I'll just have to wait and see.
The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd - I've heard good things about her books, but I see this has mixed reviews on amazon.

The Death of Sleep by Anne McCaffrey - I can't stand the cover for this one, but it's one of my favorite Anne McCaffrey books. It's about a woman space traveler who gets put into cold sleep multiple times and so much time passes that everyone else has moved on with their lives when she wakes up. She's not even at the top of her profession anymore and has to read up on all of the advancements that happened when she was asleep.
The Ship Who Searched by Anne McCaffrey - Another favorite. (I'm slowly filling in the missing volumes of my Anne McCaffrey collection if you couldn't tell.)
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison - On my TBR list.
The Golden Road by L. M. Montgomery - I love L. M. Montgomery's writing!
Further Chronicles of Avonlea by L. M. Montgomery - I've read the entire Anne series, but not this book (which I'm assuming is about different people).
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier - After all of the rave reviews around the blogosphere, how could I pass this one up?
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon - I've read mixed reviews for this one, but since it was so cheap (fifty cents) I figured it was worth a shot.
Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes.
Shogun by James Clavell - This one was listed as a favorite read by Kathy of Bags, Books & Bon Jovi.
Interworld by Neil Gaiman and Michael Reaves - contest win.
Julie & Julia by Julie Powell - ARC from Hachette Book Group.

Now I truly envy you!
:D
Here is my Monday post
I'm glad you liked "The Giver"; "Number the Stars" is also excellent though very different, obviously. I don't really know what can be disliked in regards to the ending but it's certainly a very good book and I definitely recommend you reread it if you've forgotten it. I hope you enjoy the rest of the books, too.
Wow, I obviously need to pay more attention to my library's book sales - I can't believe the finds you made and for such prices!
I just reviewed No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. I look forward to reading your thoughts on it. Waiting is also on my reading list, because it jumped out at me from the Pulitzer list.
You found some great books and at those prices you could afford to be impulsive. I've been wanting to read Waiting ever since I read A Free Life by Ha Jin.
Great week for you :D
happy reading.
The mermaid chair looks interesting, I must check it out
I am really envious of your library sale books. You got some really good ones. I wish my library had books like that.
Happy reading.
HERE is my mailbox monday post
What a great bunch of titles! I can't tell you how many times over the last two months I've talked myself out of buying NUMBER THE STARS - as recently yesterday! I keep telling myself I have to catch up with what I've got first. Have fun with your new batch!
Wow -- what a haul! I read the Curious Incident and absolutely loved it. It isn't for everyone, but I thought it was a fantastic and intense read. Have a great week!
what a fantastic lot of books. I read No. 1 Ladies Detective with my book club years ago. It was cute.. simple.. most of the club enjoyed it. Under the Tuscan Sun was interestingly good also. VERY different from the movie. GREAT books... Loved looking at them all.
You found some wonderful books at the library book sale! I preferred reading No. 1 Ladies Detective rather than listening to them. I hope you do as well. Curious Incident of the Dog is a wonderful book that truly depicts the mind of someone with Aspergers.
I would love to have them all!! Awesome, your going to be busy awhile LOL! I loved Curious Incident, its a quick read.
Have fun!
Natalie :0)
I used to love Number the Stars when I was younger!
Great haul! Enjoy - nice to support the library, too.
It must have been like Christmas in your house. I am really envious of the LM Montgomery ones and The Mermaid Chair. I love the No1 Ladies Detective Agency - it is such an easy read. Enjoy.
The curious incident is good...I really liked it. And I loved Number the Stars when I was younger.
Yay for winning Interworld. I'm so curious about that one now.

LOVE The LIttle Prince! And Shogun is terrific. That's a great haul.
Shogun and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time are both marvelous books. Happy reading!
Wow, you got lots of books this week! I love the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books (more than the Isabel Dalhousie ones), so I hope you enjoy this one in print form! I've also read The Mermaid Chair, which was OK, but not as good as The Secret Life of Bees. Enjoy your books!
Wow! Tons of books ... and for once I have read some of them -- including The Little Prince in French (I was a French minor and tackled it then).
I enjoyed the "No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" but stopped reading them after three books or so for some reason. Really delightful.
I read "Waiting" quite a few years ago and remember liking it but not loving it. It was an impulse read for me too.
I read "The Mermaid Chair" and liked it more than I liked "The Secret Life of Bees."
And the Mark Haddon book is top-notch!!! You'll like it I think.
And I'm in love with Anne of Green Gables so I think I'll be reading more of her too.
Well you certainly hit the jackpot! Everyone in our book group has loved the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series.
We also read the Curious Incident, but most of our ladies did not like that one. I am usually the odd duck with books like this, as I just loved it! I can't wait to see what you think of it.
My goodness, that is quite the load of books although you can't argue 17 books for 9 bucks. I really enjoyed The Mermaid Chair and Under the Tuscan Sun. Enjoy all those books!
You've received some great books! I love library book sales. I didn't read The Little Prince in French but the translation was great and Lowry and Montgomery are fav. authors. I think you will enjoy McCall Smith's book and want to read the whole series and I loved Curious Incident and I could go on but I am just looking forward see what your opinions will be :D
I should read the one about the conjoined twins, since I wrote the true story of Kendra & Maliyah Herrin who were born conjoined in Salt Lake City. Writing their book, When Hearts Conjoin, taught me a lot about conjoined twins that I didn't know. Have you read The Girls? I just picked that up to read as well.
Wow - that's a lot of books. Don't you love library sales! I frequent the Used Book Store at our library more often than I should! I won the #1 Ladies Detective Agency from the the last readathon - but never got it, and I haven't been able to figure out who was supposed to be sending it... I liked the Curious Incident book - but I read the Reader's Digest condensed version a couple of years ago.
Enjoy your books!
You made out like a bandit! What great books! Happy reading.

Diary of an Eccentric
You've got a great bunch of books here! I've got Under the Tuscan Sun saying around here somewhere and need to read it. Thanks for the reminder!
Wow! That's a lot of books. Did you read "The Story Girl" by Lucy Maud Montgomery already? "The Golden Road" is its sequel.
I haven't read "Further Chronicles of Avonlea" in a long time, but I think you'll find some familiar characters in that one.
Enjoy your haul.
Cheryl
wow, that was a great deal for all those books.
I really liked Waiting by Ha Jin, though it was frustrating at first with all the waiting, but I see the overall point of the book now that I've had time away from it.
Number the Stars was recently reviewed by Diary of an Eccentric I think.
I have the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency in my TBR mountain.
I read Rebecca ages ago and remember liking it.
I really like the TV series The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency on HBO. I've been wanting to read the books forever, but I haven't gotten around to it.
I've read both the French and English version of Le Petit Prince. It's actually more fun in French. :) But since you don't speak French, you might want to start off with the English version first. It's a great book either way.
What a fantastic haul! I remember going to Mt. Airy, NC, which is about an hour or so north of me and visiting the Chang & Eng museum exhibit. They moved there and are a big part of Mt. Airy history. That and, like, Andy Griffith. But I was always a little creeped out that they married sisters. Did all the resulting children look like brothers and sisters? Ew.
