Last weekend we went to our town's annual fourth of July celebration, which included a mini-carnival.
My 8-year-old doesn't care much for rides that have moving parts. He humored us by going on this ride with his brother.
Our 4-year-old, on the other hand, is a little dare-devil. He loves anything that moves, and went on several rides.
He really liked this motorcycle ride, but his favorite was the small roller coaster, which I think he went on about four or five times. By the last few times he was even holding his hands in the air the whole time (he gets this from his dad - I don't do roller coasters). After his first ride on the roller coaster he said, "Dad, at first it was terrifying, but then it was amazing!"
Both of the boys loved the slide and went on it about fifty times (we had all-day passes). Unfortunately this is the only slide picture that came out semi-decently.

Reviewed last week:
Yesterday we had fun playing outside in the sun. I weeded, my husband mowed the lawn, and the boys got to help wash our car. You know when you hand that hose to one kid that both kids are going to be soaked after about five minutes. It was a fun day of just hanging out and getting things done around the house.

Today I'm planning to finish reading Fragment by Warren Fahy. After that I'll probably read a few more short stories from Neil Gaiman's Fragile Things. I really need to finish that book because it's due back at the library soon. Otherwise I have a stack of books on my coffee table to choose from.
Reviewed last week:
The Giver by Lois Lowry
Emma, Volume 3 by Kaoru Mori
Crazy For the Storm by Norman Ollestad
Read but not yet reviewed:
Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen
Saffron Dreams by Shaila Abdullah
The Wednesday Sisters by Meg Waite Clayton (This was a re-read for book club. I wrote about it in my very first post on this blog when I first read it last summer, so I'm not going to review it again.)
I'm currently reading:
Fragment by Warren Fahy
Fragile Things by Neil Gaiman
Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson

It's great watching your kids have fun and just letting go a little. I went back and read your review of The Wednesday Sisters (and The Thirteenth Tale while I was there). I'm glad you enjoyed them. I liked Thirteenth Tale but couldn't get an ARC of The Wednesday Sisters (they said they had run out)when I tried last year so I have yet to read it. But I will since you say it's good. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Looks like you had a grea weekend for the 4th of July. Have a great reading weekend.
My kids used to love that big ole' super slide thing. I can't afford the county fair this year... way too expensive!
Anyway... I gave you an award and gushed about how much I loved you here: http://anovelmenagerie.com/2009/07/12/the-sunday-salon-climbing/.
Hugs.

I don't do roller coasters either. I used to, but now if I go on, I just get a big headache. Not fun!
Looks like everyone is having fun. :-) It's been a beautiful but hot weekend where I live this weekend. I didn't get nearly as much reading done as I hoped, but maybe I'll fit some in Sunday.
Have a great week, Alyce!
Love the pictures, as usual!
I love old fashioned roller coasters and can ride them all day. I don't care for the new fangled kind (where your legs dangle) too much.
I look forward to your thoughts on Fragment, I saw that at the bookstore and thought it looked interesting. :)
It's so cute that your son got excited about the little roller coaster! I remember riding one when I was about his age, and I never wanted to get off.
Those are great photos!! I remember when my boys were little and loved those rides!! Enjoy the time because they really do grow up fast!!
Thanks for sharing those pics with us. I love a good fair. Mostly the fair food but that slide thingy is a lot of fun too.
How nice that your town has a carnival for the 4th of July! It looks like the kids had a blast!!
hey that slide looks awesome! I want to slide on it!
Fragment looks creepy. Can't wait to hear what you have to say about it.
Hi Alyce, stop by when you have some time - I have an award for you
Oooh carnivals! I'm actually totally not into most carnival rides either. Something about going too fast. Glad your boys could at least humor each other a little!
Just think of the fun you'll have in the years ahead, in the big parks! Ah, those days...
If you liked "The Giver," by Lois Lowry, give "Lily's Crossing" by Patricia Reilly (sp?) Giff a look. It's a YA book, too, set inWWII. Just a good read. I looked it over the other day, probably the result of reading ANOTHER WW II-era book, Shooting an Albatross by Steven Lundin. Did you know the Army occupied a golf course in Hollywood during the war? Me, neither. This book has a "literary" feel to it, plus a page-turning plot. (And now I'm on to a new Nora Roberts. Believe it or not, the title utterly escapes me.)
I've not heard of "Fragment," but am going to put it on hold.
